Sully-sur-Loire château was erected at the end of the XIVth century on a place that had commanded one of the rare crossings of the Loire since the Gallo – roman period.
The most famous of its owners was Maximilien de Bethune, first Duke of Sully and Great Minister of Henri IV.
During your visit, you will be seduced by tapestry and painting collections having belonged to the Sully family, the impressive roof timbers of the monument and the view you will have from the covered way.
The town and the château inspired Voltaire, the XVIIIth century French poet to write these verses during his exile from Paris on the orders of the Regent :
“Under the shades always quiet
From Sully, this peaceful journey
I am one thousand times happier
Than the Great Prince who exiles me”
