Built in the middle of the 17 000 ha private forest of Fontainebleau, this château used to be one of the favourite places for the Kings who reigned over France.
From the XIIth century on the Kings of France came to hunt in Fontainebleau, but it was Francis Ist who started the Château’s construction.
In his hands, the old medieval fortress left its place for a Renaissance château, side by side with the abbey consecrated by Saint Louis in 1259.
Henri IV, Louis XIII, Louis XV and Napoléon, one after another, had the courage to improve the monument and its décor, according to the tastes of the different periods.
The result is a multiplication of courtyards and buildings, at the same time as a rich panorama of architectural and decor styles.
