Carolingian Oratory of Germigny-des-Prés

This IXth century monument is considered as being one of the oldest churches of France.
This oratory holds a splendid mosaic from the IXth century that represents the Arc of Covenant. This IXth century oratory, restored in the XIXth century, was part of the private villa of Theodulph, an important character from Charlemagne’s time. He was Bishop of Orleans, Abbot of Fleury, of Saint Aignan and of Saint Liphard, and one of Charlemagne’s Missi Dominici (bailiff of Charlemagne close to the Emperor, in charge of representing him on a limited territory).
